ZIMMER TWINS

It is believed that language lessons can be supported easily with images and animations. Today, with the help of technology in educational settings,  teachers and learners are provided with the opportunity to create animations and comic strips to make  lessons more interactive and interesting. Zimmer Twins, is one of the websites that allows both teachers and students to  engage in language learning. Therefore, get to know this website and use the tool in your classroom!

WHAT IS ZIMMER TWINS?

It is quite similar to a tool that I have introduced before-Dvolver. Zimmer Twins helps you to create an amazing movie maker by using animation.

HOW TO USE ZIMMER TWINS?

  • This website allows you to create stories or animations based on flash. You can click on the item “Make a movie” on the main menu. Then, you will be directed to the page below where it
provides several story starters that allow you to create your own movie endings or  create a movie from scratch.
    (Screenshot 1)

Screenshot 1:  Choose either to make a movie from scratch or make up an ending to an existed story.

The website focuses on three main characters: Eva and Edgar, the 12-year-old twins, and their adopted black cat named 13. You can create animations using these three characters( Screenshot 2).Zimmer Twins also allows you to piece together clips of the twins interacting and speaking through thought bubbles. You may start your movie with call-outs, actions, emotions and finally with the transitions.

Screenshot 2: Choose the character(s)

  • Start your animation after choosing the characters and the rest is based on your imagination. For more details, click here to listen to a video tutorial on how to get started with your movie.
  • Watch the video below if you want to know how the Zimmer Twins' characters are produced.

ADVANTAGES

  • Autonomous learning-  In one sense, students are becoming more autonomous as they use this tool as they are the one who is going to decide what is the best for their movie.
  • Fun and motivating- Students will enjoy use this tool as it is simple and easy to handle even if it were to be used for young learners. It uses many animation and pictures that helps students to visualise the verb(e.g, angry, yells, surprised and sings) provided in the website. Once the students engage  in the activity, their affective filter will reduced and  thus, ease them for language learning.
  • Sense of ownership- Zimmer twins allows students to personalise their own movie as this site offers loads of actions and expressions that students can choose for their movie. This makes students to think creatively and feel that they are entitled to their own movie.
  • Free lesson plans- This site includes free lesson plans that help you to use Zimmer twins with your students in classroom. However, you may need to sign for a VIP membership if you want to look for more lesson plans suggested in this site.

DISADVANTAGES

  • Unsaved workIt does not save your work unless you sign up an account with Zimmer Twins.
  • IrreversibleNo changes can be made once the movie is saved, which means it could not altered anymore. There is also a limited number of words that can be typed in the bubbles which only allow students to write a short sentence.
  • Time consuming- Using this tool for classroom activity will take up a long time, therefore, teachers should know how to make sure learners will never carried away with those attractive cartoons and animations.
  • Cannot be embedded- the video produced cannot be embedded onto  your blog or other websites which make it a bit difficult everytime you want to watch it directly from your blog.
  • Subscription- Users have to purchase a VIP membership in order to share the completed movies or view other movies.

HAPPY TEACHER'S DAY!

Hi Teacher Nur!This poem is dedicated for you. We have made this poem specially for you and we hope you enjoy reading it. Thanks for teaching us Four Cadbury Pandan. You are  an awesome teacher who always support us when we need you, help and nurture us in all aspects. We want to express our gratitude to have a dedicated teacher like you. We love you Teacher Nuras!

Dear Miss,
Today is a very special day
Filled with joy and gay
We can see your smile
Very sincere to our heart

A chapter in our life slowly reopens
The first day we laid our eyes on you
You patiently taught us
and today we meet again
to celebrate you on your day

We have gone through miles and now,
We want to say thank you
for the turning key that brings us to many life's door
We have been on the top
Because of you and your way

One shiny day,
I sat close to window
Seeing a beautiful scenery
and the memories
conquered me back.

In your class
We spent our time with timeless Shakespeare
You once said,
Monday with Thomas Hardy
Then suddenly we fall asleep

We will remember the days
We have you in our English Studies
I'm proud to day when anyone asks
"Yes, Miss Nur is our special person in life"

POEM:IN THE MIDST OF HARDSHIP

IN THE MIDST OF HARDSHIP

by Latiff Othman

At dawn they returned home
their soaky clothes torn

and approached the stove

their limbs marked by scratches
their legs full of wounds
but on their brows
there was not a sign of despair
The whole day and night just passed
they had to brave the horrendous flood
in the water all the time
between bloated carcasses
and tiny chips of tree barks
desperately looking for their son’s
albino buffalo that was never found
They were born amidst hardship

and grew up without a sigh or a complaint

now they are in the kitchen, making

jokes while rolling their ciggarete leaves

LYRICS TRAINING

Learning a foreign language does not have to be that dry and boring memorisation (a traditional way of learning a language). It is found that listening to songs is a great way to help you in learning a language. Since youTube is one of the most recogniseable and widely used resources on the web, Lyrics Training seems to be the first dedicated language learning website that realises the popularity of youTube and use it in educational context. Therefore, I would introduce you to this useful website today!

What is Lyrics Training?

It is a website  that uses current popular youTube music videos to give you a fun way to practice your language skills. It sorts videos by fluency levels and language. The site offers six languages(Dutch, English, France, German, Italy and Spanish) currently.

Screenshot 1: Home page

How to use it?

Screenshot 2: Select the level

    • Search for a youTube-hosted music video and select one of three mastery levels: (1) Beginner; (2) Intermediate and; (3) Expert. (Screenshot 2)

Screenshot 3: Fill in the blanks

        • Lyrics appear underneath with several words missing as you play the video. Therefore, your job is to fill in the missing words. (Screenshot 3)

Screenshot 4: See translations in your own language

          • You can also select your own language if you want to see translations of the lyrics in your own language. (Screenshot 4)
          • The video stops playing if you get stumped and continue to play as you come up with the word. Don't take too long because the tool keeps track of the time that you take to fill in the blanks.
          • You can press 'backspace' key to replay the line  if  you missed your chance to fill in the blanks or if you can't really catch the missing words sung in the song. Click 'withdraw' button to see the words that elude you.
          •  Your score will appear after you finish playing the songs.

          Advantages

          • Free and Fun- It is fun as you can sing along and choose the song that you like.  It is  also free and does not require registration, but it is better to sign up for an account so that you can save your score marks.
          • Skills training- It helps to train listening and writing skills as you have to listen carefully to the song to type in the correct words in the gaps.
          • Autonomous learning- This  website helps you to practice your listening skill, spelling as well as pronunciation during your own free time. This may encourage autonomous learning.

          Disadvantages

          • Colloquial Language-  Some of the lyrics uses colloquial language such as 'gonna' and 'wanna' and that can be confusing to some who have basic level of language proficiency.
          • Inaccurate Translations- This website does not have dictionary and the simultaneous translation is not very accurate.

          FACING TEENAGE BLUES

          WHAT TEENS WORRY ABOUT

Everyone has their stress points, and teens are no exception. Here's what they report makes them worry:
          • What people think of them. Teens are very concerned that they “select” the right identity. They don't want to be viewed in a negative light (as a “dork,” for example). Unfortunately, dorkhood may encompass many qualities you admire—like making good grades or playing the viola in the school orchestra.
They may also seek peer approval by taking up habits like smoking or drinking.
The stronger a teen's self-esteem, the less prone she will be to tailoring her image to what she thinks her peers want her to be.
          • Grades. Believe it or not, most teens—even the cut-up who rides along with the C-average—worry about grades. Good grades are a sign of well-being and achievement, and even though teacher approval may not be as cool as peer approval, it does count.
At heart, kids know that a good grade or some type of honorable recognition buys them the legitimacy they so very much want to have. However, the longer they are discounted as possible achievers, the harder it becomes to get them back on track.
If you're the parent of someone who seems lost, read Homework Tips for Teens, Tackling Tough Reading Assignments, and Underachieving Teens for ways that your teen can be recognized. Your child may not be a math genius or an authority on the complete works of Dickens, but if he can find a subject or hobby at which he excels, chances are good he'll start doing well elsewhere, too.
          • Lack of time. Teens, like you and I, are strapped for time. They represent the first of the “over-programmed” generation. (That's what you get for enrolling your kid in dance at age two and karate at age four.) If you didn't teach your kids time management when they were younger, you might want to start now.
Talk to your teen about learning to set priorities and to balance her time. (Maybe you need to conduct a “reality check” on your own schedule, too.) Life holds so many options, but she (and you) can only concentrate on a few at a time.

          • Family difficulties. Most teens have perfected the art of acting indifferent to their families, but this nonchalant veneer belies how they really feel. If there's trouble at home (whether it's emotional or financial) your teen is keenly aware of it. Take the time to explain and to reassure as much as possible.

          • The future. From getting into college to finding a job, teens are well aware of the need to make a place for themselves in the world and the competition that they'll meet in trying to get there.
Keep reminding your teen of the things she is good at and how her qualities (intelligence, sensitivity, patience, sociability) and skills (being great with kids, well-organized, or a computer wizard) are of value to the world. Assure your teen that there will be a place for her, though what it is and where it is may be a surprise. Encourage your teen to be open to many possibilities; sometimes the path to the future may not be predictable, but it can still be filled with wonderful opportunities.
p/s: What do you think? Do you feel the same? Share your thoughts.

POEM: HE HAD SUCH A QUIET EYES

          3.1 SYNOPSIS OF THE POEM
The poem is about a woman who has been deceived to think that she was loved by a man with ‘quiet eyes’. She suffers for this and only learns on hindsight not to trust or give in to men who seek women only for pleasure. The poet gives an advice on being able to recognise what is true and what is not, when a person is truly friendly and when he is not. You may lose in the game of love and give your heart away, but knowing the truth of the situation will mean that you will not suffer any lasting losses.

3.2 UNDERSTANDING THE POEM [STANZA BY STANZA]
          Stanza 1
The woman is taken up with his ‘quiet eyes’. The eyes mesmerise and beg her to ‘be nice’ to him and make him extremely happy, that is ‘render him paradise’. The poet uses a very long imagery of the eyes ‘breathing desolate sighs’ to enhance the effect of the eyes on the girl. The woman, being enamoured with those eyes, does not notice he is deceiving her. It would not be difficult to see through the man if the woman had her feet on the ground because the eyes have only the ‘thinnest ice’, easy to break through to learn the man’s true nature.

          Stanza 2
Something has happened to the woman and she has learnt the truth about the man. The poet suggests that she has learnt the hard way that is she learns her lesson through bad experience. She has made a mistake of trusting the man because she has refused to listen to the advice not ‘to compromise’, that is, lower her standards or expectations in order to please a man who seduces women.

          Stanza 3
The poet extends her friendly advice to women to understand what is meant by ‘nice’ what it means when men are ‘nice’ to you. When he is ‘nice’, friendly and pleasant to you, make sure that he is sincere and trustworthy and not because he has ulterior motives, that is he wants something from you in return. The poet further comments that love may be a gamble as suggested in ‘dice’, you take your chances with someone, you may find true love or you may not. The important issue here is that ultimately you have not lost anything because you have not compromised, you are not deceived.

3.3 THE POEM – LINE BY LINE
          STANZA 1 MEANING BY LINE
          • He had such quiet eyes – His eyes were calm and quiet
          • She did not realise – She did not know
          • They were two pools of lies-  His eyes were like two pools filled with lies
          • Layered with thinnest ice – Thinly veiled, like very thin ice
          • To her, those quiet eyes – To the woman, those calm and quiet eyes
          • Were breathing desolate sighs – Looked very sad and desolate
          • Imploring her to be nice – The eyes were begging her to be nice to him
          • And to render him to paradise – And to give him happiness and bliss so that he would feel like he was in paradise (heaven)
          STANZA 2 MEANING BY LINE
          • If only she’d been wise – The woman wished she had been wiser in her past actions
          • And had listened to the advice – And she had listened to the sound advice given to her by people who cared about her
          • Never to compromise – They had advised her not to give up her moral values or principles
          • With pleasure-seeking guys – When she was with men who wanted only pleasure and fun
          • She’d be free from the ‘hows and whys’ – If she had listened to them, she would not be haunted by questions of hows and whys and the difficult situation she was in.
          STANZA 3 MEANING BY LINE
          • Now here’s a bit of advice – Let me give you a bit of advice
          • Be sure that nice really means nice – Make sure that the person you think is nice, is truly sincere and trustworthy
          • Then you’ll never be losing at dice – Then, you will not lose in a game of chance or a game of love where you can lose your heart to an undeserving man
          • Though you may lose your heart once or twice – Even if you should fall in love and lose your heart to love once or twice
3.4 Elements of the Poem – Literal and Figurative Meaning
          Stanza 1

          Literal Meaning

When the persona looked into the young man’s sincere-looking eyes, she was deceived into thinking that he needed someone to love. She was not aware that betrayal was second nature to him. His eyes even made her feel compelled to be ‘nice’ to him.

          Figurative Meaning
Meeting people and getting involved in a social relationship is part and parcel of life. However, along the way, we may meet two-faced people with ulterior motives. Sometimes, they may come across as so sincere that we innocently accept them as friends or partners.

          Stanza 2

          Literal Meaning

When the persona was betrayed by the man, she wondered why she had not been wiser. She should have remembered the age-old advice of not believing man blindly. If she had held on to her principles, she would not be asking herself why she had been cheated.

          Figurative Meaning
Social relationships can turn sour if one party betrays the other. Hence, one should be careful of the other party’s motives. In any case, do not compromise your principles, as someone who is sincere would not force you into giving up your morals.

          Stanza 3

          Literal Meaning

The poet advises young ladies to be more careful before getting involved in relationships with men. They must make sure they know the men well. They should learn to differentiate between sincerity and falsehood. They will eventually meet the right man, though they may lose their hearts to a few times before it could happen.

          Figurative Meaning
It is always good to be cautious before committing to a relationship to avoid serious consequences. You have to make sure you can trust the person you befriend. Do not gamble with your affections, even when you fall in love.

          3.5 Themes

          (1) Strong Moral Values and Self-Respect
The woman in the poem got herself into a difficult situation and was cheated by a man because she gave in to his pleading and his insincere lies. She displayed weakness in her moral standing and lost her self-respect as a result. We should never lower our self-esteem no matter how much we like a man. If a man has respect for the woman he loves, he too would not ask her to do what is morally wrong.

          (2) Deception in Appearances
The woman is taken in by the man’s gentle and quiet eyes. She thinks he is a truthful and trustworthy person. The theme in this poem focuses on deception in appearances. Do not judge a person’s character by his appearance. As can be seen in this poem, a gentle and kind-looking man can actually be a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

          (3) Consequences
When we make mistakes in life, we have to live with the consequences. The persona tells us that the woman is haunted with questions of ‘hows and whys’. She probably asks herself every day how she could have fallen for his lies; how she could have forgotten the moral values instilled in her by her parents; how she could have ignored all the advice given to her by people who love and care about her. She would probably also wonder why she had not been wiser in her choice of men; why she did not see through his deception and insincerity.

          (4) Listen to Advice
The poet wants to reach out to all young readers. The woman in the poem wished she ‘had listened to the advice’. She poured out her disappointment, frustration and hurt in this poem and wished she had ‘been wise’. The poet cautions young readers that they should not be impulsive in their actions and they should, above all, listen to the advice of their elders so that they would not end up like the woman – full of regrets.

3.6 Moral Values & Lessons Learnt
          (1) Avoid Being Deluded by Looks or Appearance
          • We sometimes encounter people who have ill intentions towards us.
          • These are con men who prey on young women.
          • They look nice and decent but have bad motives.
          • So we should take precaution against them.
          • We should not judge a book by its cover.

          (2) Listen to Beneficial Advice
          • We are given good advice when others feel that we need it.
          • We should listen to their advice.
          • The advice is for our own good.
          • It prevents us from getting hurt or getting into trouble.

          3.7 Setting
          • The poem is set in the present – the world around us now.
          • It highlights the fact that the people around us are not always sincere.
          • They may have ulterior motives towards us.
          • Some have the intention to cheat us.
          • In the case of the woman in the poem, the man only wanted to have sexual pleasure from her.
          • However, she saw him as a man in need of love and consolation.
          • The poem puts forward the need to practise caution when we deal with the people around us.

          IF I WERE A POEM

Hello everyone! These are the poems that  we did in the class yesterday. Good job Four Cadbury Pandan! All of you are creative indeed ! Enjoy reading our unique poems!

          If I were a poem
I would be a simple poem
          A short haiku poem

          By Izzah Fatanah

          If I were a poem
I would tell the tales of love
Love that is truthful and kind
          and not conceited
          Love that binds the hearts
          of two, undefeated
Love that is ever eternal, glorified,
In more ways that can be done,
Love lives in all of us
          Making us, one.

          By Sarah Hashim

          If I were a poem
Then I would live for eternal
          Neglecting the pain of death
          Being immortal
Breathing in the air of love
          Feeling unafraid of being forgotten

          By Fatin Marini

          Life o life
          How you revolve each day
Would you leave in a life?
Or bring with you ray and gray

          Never are you predictable
          You bring about surprises
          You turned around the table
Which results in victories and loses?
          If I were a poem,
you'll be my never ending rhythm.

          By Safiya

          A blank page
          is carved with words
          from glorious line,
          which moves the vines.

          I am a poem!
I am read day by day
I bundle out stories and ideas
          For lessons to take.

          I am a poem!
As long as men alive, I will be read,
As long as men read, I will not be lost.
For eternity! cos, I am a poem...

          Full of emotions and feelings
          Full of expressions and meanings

          By Mish Qist

          With only a pen and...
          With only a hand
I can convince people as much as I can

          By Elaine Yuen

          The dictionary  was flipped,
           The boy fell asleep,
           Aand there I was, sigh,
           waiting for the wise
           To recite and feel,
           Thus gone inside

          I, piece of art
          A poem to be read
          A masterpiece to be felt
          A chant to be mesmerised

          If i were a poem
I am to be adored by you
          If I were a poem
I am to be right beside you

A company to fill up your day
And help you to find your way
An antidote to all your wounds
And a miraculous cure for all your blues

          If I were a poem
I'll be the complement of your missing pieces

If I were a poem in a book,
I would be as amazing as I could
Spreading the joy to the people who look,
Until they know that literature is good
And book it as their soul's food

          If I were a poem.

          If I were a play,
          You will probably fall asleep.
          If I were a song,
          You will be definitely sing.
          If I were a poem,
You will surely get me wrong.

          I'm a poem
          Functioning the feelings' embodiment
          Sometimes am not appreciated,
But for this worls,I'm actually required
As how friends can be found on Google
But sometimes they are treated as boondoggle
          Since I am a poem...

A few words and a few lines,
          Of knowledge and depth,
          full of feelings and expressions
Poems bring about a new hatch.

          Poems, they bring much joy
          And give equal hope,
To those who are weary and teary.
          If I were a poem,
          I'd be a happy one.
          Bringing cheer and removing fear.

I hope that we enjoyed our lesson yesterday. I believe that we know a few different types of poem already! What are they??
