DIRECTED WRITING
General Guidelines
1.
In Section A, Paper 1 of the SPM English 1119 examination paper, students are required to answer one question on
directed writing.
2.
This question is compulsory. Notes and other guidelines are given
to help students write the composition.
3.
The main types of writing that students will be tested on are:
a. Talks, speeches and reports
b. Stories
c. Presenting information from graphic materials
d. Formal and informal letters
e. Descriptions of places, people, events, processes
and procedures
f. Reports
4. Read the question carefully. Be sure that you are
familiar with the format of the types of writing stated earlier. You will be penalized for using the wrong format.
5. Plan your essay before writing it. Organize your ideas and
separate them into different paragraphs and give supporting details. Use
sentence connectors and logical connectors.
6. Use all the points given. Give relevant details and elaborate on
the ideas.
7. Check your spelling and grammar. Use formal and correct English.
